1930s 'Bessie' Wrap Beach Pyjama - Hydrangea
Our 'Under a Paper Moon' collection proudly reintroduces the beloved beach pyjama style, 'Bessie' a firm foxy-favourite. This limited edition ensemble is inspired by sketches and images from the late 1920s and early 1930s — read the story behind the collection here.
Elevate your Spring/Summer wardrobe with this beautiful and dreamy look. Dreamy scattering of hydrangea blossoms unfolds across a soft-beige base, accented with blush pink blooms and the palest hints of duck egg and sage and cinched with our plum viscose to tie.
A beach pyjama is a wide-legged, trouser-based resort or lounge outfit, typically worn with a matching wrap top, sash or caplet, a glamorous alternative to the swimsuit that defined seaside style in the late 1920s and 1930s.
In the late 1920s and into the 1930s, the beach pyjama or 'lounge ensemble' became something of a phenomenon. Although considered risque by some, the rise in leisure time and encouragement in healthy outdoor activities during the 20s and 30s created a demand for more casual and comfortable clothing. Combine this with what many consider to be the best clothing design era thus far, marked the creation of some of the most stylish pieces we are thrilled to re-create.
We've taken style lines from the earlier period of late 20s/early 30s for this particular design... For more colours and styles, see our full range of 1930s beach pyjamas, including the wrap-front Bessie in Eden. Super wide leg of course, a flattering cape-let which creates faux sleeves and contrast sash to tie the wrap style.
This style is so comfy, you may never want to take them off!
Similar to many vintage all in ones and modern jump suits, this is a wrap style that you climb into. Bib front opening creates a flattering V neckline and ties with contrast sash at the side or cinch in further by wrapping the sash around the waist. The caplet is soft and full - extends around the back.
Our design is simple yet still exudes 1930s details including:-
- wrap style with contrast sash
- super wide leg
- contrast piping
- cape-let with contrast edging
Inside Leg approx. 64cm
Fabric: 100% woven viscose
Care: dry clean (3% shrinkage may occur)
Made with love in Yorkshire, England in limited numbers.
What is the 'Bessie' beach pyjama style?
Bessie is House of Foxy's wrap-style 1930s beach pyjama; a wide-leg, one-piece design with a flattering caplet and contrast sash, inspired by sketches and images from the late 1920s and early 1930s.
How do you wear the Bessie wrap beach pyjama?
It's a wrap style you step into, with a bib-front V neckline that ties at the side, you can cinch the sash further around the waist for a more fitted look.
What is a caplet on a beach pyjama?
The caplet is a soft, flowing panel that drapes over the shoulders like a short cape, creating the look of sleeves without restricting movement.
Is the Hydrangea print used on other House of Foxy pieces?
Yes. The same exclusive Hydrangea print appears on our Laverne Dress & Kimono, recreated from an original vintage textile.
Laverne is part of our centenary capsule collection, Under a Paper Moon — created to mark 100 years since 1926. Read the story behind the collection, Can You Wear 1920s Fashion Today?"
